Come journey with Kim Carner into a land of richness and beauty, where history is around every corner, the food will have you savoring every bite, and the landscape will leave you contemplating time itself. Last year’s trip to the Dordogne was filled with magic around every bend, amazing food and rich cultural experiences. We had such a rich experience as we became locals and settled in for a week of yoga, connection to nature, and enjoying the pace of the French countryside. The Dordogne Valley is situation roughly in the middle of France and was carved by glaciers that exposed limestone cliffs with both ancient deep sea fossils and the world’s oldest known cave art.
Sounds dramatic? Well that’s what this region is all about. Dramatic land, food, and history. Although we are intentionally visiting in the fall after peak season, which invites an almost ironically calm and peaceful presence among the echoes of the past, the people of the Perigord know how to live the good life. This time of year attracts space to sink into the harvest and listen to the myriad of birdsongs echoing throughout the Medieval towns and forests. We may spot swans, owls feasting on hares, deer, and flocks of birds dancing over the Dordogne river.
As well as daily yoga, we have a full week of activities planned, giving you an in-depth experience of the land, history, food, and culture of the region. We will join our host, Chef Ian for a morning at the markets, exploring local foods and meeting the locals who produce them, and then head back to our BnB for a private cooking class with the day’s bounty. We will spend a day exploring the Dordogne by canoe, stopping to visit castles and pilgrimage sites along the way. Enjoy a visit to the Grotte de Font-de-Gaume where we will see the world’s oldest art- 14,000 year old cave paintings- as well as a trip to the caves and underground waterways of the Gouffe de Padirac and views of Rocamador. We will close out the week with another day accompanying Ian foraging for local foods, followed by a visit to Eduardo’s Truffle Farm to learn more about this local delicacy (and to enjoy a meal featuring the famed truffe noire of the Perigord). While we have plenty of activities planned, all are optional and you are free to listen to your own rhythms and join in for any or all activities as you wish.
Le Chevrefeuille is ideally situated in the heart of the Dordogne, with quick access to all the main attractions of the region. Just 5km from the town of St. Cyprien (bikes are available at the BnB for independent explorations of the region), Le Chevrefeuille is a perfect country escape run by the warm and welcoming Ian and Sara Fisk. Originally from England, they moved to Dordogne 14 years ago for the food and lifestyle and to create a family business.
At Le Chevrefeuille there are 5 bed and breakfast rooms along with 2 apartments with kitchens and common rooms. We will be booking on a first come first serve basis, so please specify the room you would like upon booking (family room, double room, or twin room, a room in the two bedroom apartment, or a room in the 3 bedroom apartment) and please let us know if you have any questions. All prices are per person and assuming double occupancy per room.
Ahh, the food of the Dordogne! As rich as the landscape itself, the Perigord (as the Dordogne and surrounding areas are called) is known for its decadent cuisine. We will be given a thorough education of the food of the region by the incredibly knowledgeable Ian at La Chevrefeuille as well as Eduardo at the truffle farm. Breakfast will be served at the BnB and in addition to various lunches and dinners there, we will also have several meals out at hand picked restaurants while out on our excursions.
We will be offering a variety of yoga practices, including vigorous Vinyasa classes as well as gentle Hatha and meditation sessions. There will also be some time for partner yoga and acro as well as the inevitable handstand playtime for those interested. We are both very experienced at creating all level classes that offer something for everyone, no matter what your experience level or physical needs may be.
